Goodbye to you, winter

Friday 13 March 2009 - Filed under General

The last weekend of winter is here. Everything starts happening now. The next three months will be a blur. Three exciting signs of spring in Portland this week:

The first irresistible plant sale of the season

This Saturday in Portland, there’s a North American Rock Garden Society plant sale, open to the public. Growers will be there and available to talk about rare plants and shrubs you typically only see in catalogs.
Lloyd Center Doubletree, 1000 NE Multnomah, Portland OR. Admission is free.

Grasses are showing up in nurseries

The grasses are here
They’re not pretty yet, but it’s all too easy to imagine them in their full summer glory, which has me wandering my yard, yet again searching for a possible spot in the sun for one more grass.

Baby chicken time

Baby chicks
Baby chicks appear at local garden shops, tempting me to set up a coop.

I can’t even motivate to get out there and cut back last year’s spent perennials much less think about new stuff already!! It’s just too chilly. I put off the cleanup every year because I hate being cold and then one morning I’ll look out the window and see so much new growth battling through the old that I’ll grab my Felcos and spend 15 minutes in chop chop mode before I realize that I’m in my robe and slippers…

All good signs! That and our wonderful weather today and the night temps going up a little! I’ve ofter been tempted to put up a coop- don’t know where I’d put it- but I’ve been tempted. I think I should stick with a small worm bin :)

Um, did you just jinx us? I hope not! I have major chicken envy… but know all the care (i.e. smelly poop-removal) would fall to me, so I just ogle others’ instead. Do you have a favorite kind? How many can you own in Portland? We are allowed three hens in Seattle, but I know someone who had many many more, including roosters. And ducks. And they all came inside sometimes. Kooky!

LeeAnne – It was really cold and stormy, I don’t blame you. I prefer being cold to being hot, so this is the time of year I get things done. When the sun comes out, I hide inside.
Tessa – Still keeping my fingers crossed, but there are no more freezing temps in the forecast, I really think we’re done.
Karen – We’re allowed three chickens here. I don’t know my ckicken types, but I like the little ones with fancy feathers, like the black and white spotted ones with red feet. If I had chickens, I’d probably want to bring them inside too. It’s probably best that I resist.
