Post snow

It warmed up this weekend and I uncovered all my winterized stuff. We had about a week below freezing, a foot of snow, with some prolonged periods in the mid 20s.
I pushed all the agave pots up against the south side of the house, covered them with a frost blanket, and covered that with burlap. The cloth wasn’t terribly well secured, I just draped it over the top. This agave desmettiana came out looking like vegetables forgotten in the crisper for too long. The other two neighboring agaves came out fine, though. I’m not sure if this was an issue of the cold temperatures, or if it got too soggy. The ice did seem to melt in a drip line right on this pot, and the sogginess could definitely do an agave in, I just didn’t realize it would happen so fast.

Agave attenuata did fine with a home inside, but I broke a few of its leaves. Sad.

Rhododendron sinogrande was half covered in a wire cage covered in a fleece blanket and burlap, and half up against an insulated banana cage, with the top covered up for the entire week. It isn’t looking so hot, it’s droopy and appears to have some sort of flesh eating disease. It looks a little thirsty too, I’ll see if it perks up in the rain.

A gazing glove under the eaves got smashed when the ice and snow pulled the gutters down.

On the plus side, a week without gardening has me itching to get out there and get to work. Plenty of cleanup to be done. Many of my perennials have turned to slime.

Is it asking too much for things to dry out a little before we have to start cleaning up? There’s some terrible looking stuff out there.

Oh, snow – so pretty when it arrives, such devastation in its wake. Bummer about your globe and gutter, hope that all gets repaired/replaced without too much trouble and expense. We may have a big revamp of plantscapes ahead of us here in the NW!
