A night in New Orleans

Palm trees at Harrah's in New Orleans

We’re spending a few nights in New Orleans for a conference. It’s our first time in the city, and we spent the evening walking through the French Quarter. About three blocks away from the hotel, we came across an amazing marching band playing outside the House of Blues. The photo doesn’t do them justice. Their music was incredible.

It’s possible that I would not travel by choice at all if it weren’t for the possibility of buying something, so when I came across a cheesy souvenir shop, with Mardi Gras masks lining the walls, I couldn’t pass it up. I came away with this not-as-scary-as-some-others mask.

Every single person walking down Bourbon street was carrying a glass of colorful boozy looking drinks, and I was feeling left out, so when I found shops selling daiquiris out of Slurpee machines, I had to get a Medium White Russian in a big styrofoam cup. I’ve never felt more refined.

Properly armed with the requisite tourist accessories, I snapped several photos of the plants and buildings in this beautiful part of town.

It’s a marvelous old city, isn’t it? I haven’t been back in a dozen years, but it does my heart good to see it still thumping after the recent disaster.

Wonderful images! New Orleans is definitely on my list of places to visit in the US. I have a confession to make…Nora and I were peeking at your lovely blog and lusting over your closet and shoes in it. I think you may be my virtual soulmate. :)

Slurpee booze machines???? I can’t believe I’ve never experienced that, it seems like it would have made middle school much less painful.
